Joyful Latin for every learner
I teach Latin to kids and adults of all ages and abilities, from absolute beginners to graduate students reading Anselm and Aquinas.
Anyone can learn Latin, because Latin is more than conjugation charts and translation drills: "it is the gateway to a magic country" (Maud Reed), and story is the key that unlocks the door. Vade mēcum!

What is joyful Latin?
Mima Maxey said it best in the Foreword to A New Latin Primer (1933). I've paraphrased her words here.
You learn Latin in order to read Latin.
Latin can do a lot for your life, but the most important thing is the language itself. From day one, I spread a feast before my students. Myth, poetry, history, philosophy, comedy
—there is something here for everyone.
You learn to read by reading, listening, writing, and speaking.
You don't have to be good at chanting charts or memorizing grammar rules to learn Latin—I never was! In my classes, you'll learn Latin the way you learned your mother tongue: through conversation and storytelling.
You learn to read well through consistent, gentle practice.
Learning a language is hard work. But it's a marathon, not a sprint, and anyone can do it. I make Latin comprehensible to every student. You'll look forward to what's next, because you know you can master it.
My journey with Latin
I hated Latin...
I started learning Latin at a classical school when I was six years old, and I hated it. I had wonderful teachers, but I was bad at memorizing vocabulary, I couldn't keep my declensions straight—it just wasn't for me. I remember my fourth grade teacher's face when she passed back my Latin test with a score of 10%.
...until I started speaking it...
But in fifth grade, I found a guide to Latin poetry in the back of my dictionary—and discovered beauty. Latin was no longer grammar facts and conjugation charts, but a living language. I joined classics club, won state and national awards for competitive Latin recitation, and made close friends. I had found a place where I belonged.
...and I never stopped.
In 2020, as I was finishing my PhD in medieval Latin philosophy, I started teaching Latin. I transformed my school's Latin program into one in which Latin is heard more than English in the classroom. Struggling students thrived, and bored students came to life, because Latin had come to life for them.
